Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne! For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
Auld Lang Syne, often attributed to Robert Burns, is actually an old Scottish folk song that Burns recorded. Popularized in the movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, Auld Lang Syne has become the song sung at the New Year. It is basically a call to remember old friends as time continues to move on.
Friendships are invaluable. Friends double our joy and half our sorrow. They laugh, cry, play, work, talk, listen, and pray with us. They stand beside us in the best of times and the worst of times.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 speaks of the value of a friend. It says:
“ Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help. Again, if two lie together, they keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.”
In this new year, may we journey together, spurring each other on to love and good deeds, encouraging each other, and loving each other deeply.
Happy New Year!
